| What is Infrared Heating all about?
|
|
We get a lot of questions about the best applications for the iHeater and infrared heating in general. This is our page of "brutal honesty", where we'll tell you exactly how and where to use an iHeater (or any infrared heater for that matter) for the best and most noticeable benefit. Sometimes we'll get questions like "Will it heat my garage?" or statements like "I need one of these for my pole barn." Hold on there....
In our aim for 100% satisfied customers, we'd rather have you understand the intended and optimal use of infrared heat BEFORE you buy an iHeater, rather than call us a week later and say, "my Michigan basement is still cold." So, before you make your purchase, please read the Q&A page as well as the following to make sure your iHeater will perform to your expectations.
-
Infrared heaters do not perform as well in drafty areas. They propagate their heat on stable humidity, so a moving current of cold air makes them feel less effective.
-
Infrared heat needs materials in your room that will hold and retain heat to perform optimally. This means walls that are well insulated will help the heater work to its full potential. Rooms with a lot of windows do not lend themselves to optimal performance (sunrooms, etc.)
-
Rooms with 2 or more exterior walls that are poorly insulated will not retain heat as well, regardless of the heat source (gas, LP, infrared, etc.). In these settings you'll experience a savings, but it may not be as dramatic.
-
This type of heat DOES NOT WORK in an unfinished garage or basement with large amounts of unfinished concrete. That goes for pole barns too.
-
This IS NOT a stand-alone heat source. You will not be able to turn your furnace off no matter how well you're insulated. The system saves you money by reducing the amount your furnace needs to run, not stopping it from running.
-
The best application for the iHeater or any infrared heater is as a supplemental heat source in your primary living area. Used in this way, your furnace will run considerably less and you will save a substantial amount of money. Claims and promises that infrared heaters will do more than this are short-sighted sales pitches meant to close the deal, not a true reflection of the heaters capabilities and not a way to generate a long list of happy clients!
We hope this helps set the record straight about infrared heating in general. We've seen blog posts and ratings that minimize the effectiveness of the heaters, and in every circumstance you can tell the owner isn't using the device as intended. We own and use this product everyday, and know it works.
